We saw how solar
was being done.
We did it differently.
MiniGrid was started by people who were tired of seeing homeowners let down.
I’m Alex, founder of MiniGrid. Before solar, I served as a firefighter. Nearly a decade ago, I moved into the renewable energy industry because I believed solar could genuinely help homeowners take control of rising energy costs and become more energy independent.
What I didn’t expect was how many shortcuts existed within the industry.
Over the years I’ve seen systems installed without proper surge protection, batteries fitted incorrectly, poor cable management hidden out of sight, and customers left with little or no support once the final invoice had been paid. The shocking reality is that these problems aren’t limited to the cheapest installers. We’ve seen poor workmanship from companies charging premium prices too.
That’s why MiniGrid was built.
Our philosophy is simple: if we wouldn’t install it on our own home, we won’t install it on yours.
Every system is designed around performance, safety, and longevity. We don’t choose equipment because it gives us the biggest margin. We choose it because we believe it’s the best solution for our customers. That’s why we recommend industry-leading products such as Aiko solar panels, premium battery storage systems, and quality protection equipment throughout our installations.
Alongside me is Rebecca, my partner in both life and business. Rebecca comes from a commercial housing and construction background, bringing extensive experience in project management, quality control, and delivering high standards across large-scale developments. Together, we combine technical expertise, practical construction knowledge, and a genuine commitment to doing things properly.
Our Solar MOT inspections regularly uncover installations that aren’t performing as they should. Some have missing safety equipment. Some have been poorly commissioned. Others simply weren’t designed correctly from the start. Every one of those inspections reinforces why we built MiniGrid differently.
We believe homeowners deserve:
- Honest advice, not high-pressure sales.
- Quality workmanship, not shortcuts.
- Premium products chosen for performance, not profit.
- Proper aftercare and ongoing support.
- A system installed right the first time.
Today, MiniGrid operates from Dorset and serves customers across England and Wales. Whether we’re installing solar panels, battery storage, EV chargers, or whole-home backup systems, our mission remains the same as it was on day one:
Do it right, or don’t do it at all.
That’s the MiniGrid difference.
The things we won’t
compromise on.
These aren’t marketing words. They’re the specific decisions we make on every single job.
New consumer unit. Every time.
We fit a new consumer unit on every installation as standard. Not every installer does. We think it’s non-negotiable — and Building Regulations agree with us.
Surge protection. Always.
Required under BS 7671 Amendment 3. We’ve always included it. Ask your other quotes. The ones who don’t include it are the ones cutting corners on your safety.
Best panels. Not cheapest.
We use Aiko n-type TOPCon panels because they’re genuinely the best performing residential panel available. Not because they give us the best margin.
Our engineers. Always ours.
The people who survey your roof are the people who install your system. Accountability flows all the way through — and it ends with us.
Still here after install day.
We answer the phone when you call six months later. We help when something doesn’t look right. We think this is the actual job — not just the install day.
Honest. Always.
If solar doesn’t make sense for your property, we’ll tell you. If your roof isn’t right, we’ll tell you. No hard sell. No vague promises. Just honest advice.
Building something
worth trusting.
From Dorset to Wales — a growing business built on referrals, repeat customers and a refusal to compromise on quality.
MiniGrid founded
Started in Dorchester, Dorset with a clear mission — solar installed the right way. First residential installs completed in the local area.

Solax Certified Installer
We fit a new consumer unit on every installation as standard. Not every installer does. We think it’s non-negotiable — and Building Regulations agree with us.

Victron Energy Certified
Required under BS 7671 Amendment 3. We’ve always included it. Ask your other quotes. The ones who don’t include it are the ones cutting corners on your safety.

Best panels. Not cheapest.
We use Dmeg C or Aiko n-type TOPCon panels because they’re genuinely the best performing residential panel available. Not because they give us the best margin.

Aiko Authorised Installer
The people who survey your roof are the people who install your system. Accountability flows all the way through — and it ends with us.

Zappi EV Charger Installer
We answer the phone when you call six months later. We help when something doesn’t look right. We think this is the actual job — not just the install day.
Honest. Always.

What we do that
others don’t.
Ask these questions when getting quotes. The answers will tell you everything about who you’re dealing with.
New consumer unit on every job
Ask other installers if they include this. Many don’t — it’s a cost they cut. We include it every time, no exceptions.
Surge protection included as standard
Now required under current regulations. We’ve always included it. Some installers still don’t — ask to see their compliance documentation.
Aiko/DmegC panels — not budget alternatives
Ask other installers if they include this. Many don’t — it’s a cost they cut. We include it every time, no exceptions.
Certified Van der Valk mounting
Our mounting systems are certified, warranted and properly rated. Not generic brackets sourced to hit a price point.
Our own engineers
Every survey, every install, every aftercare visit — MiniGrid engineers only. We don’t outsource accountability.
Solar MOT aftercare service
We check other installers’ work regularly via our Solar MOT service. We know what bad installs look like — which is why we don’t do them.
